The One Thing Abortion Supporters Don’t Want You to See
Recently, a Facebook friend posted a piece from a couple of years ago by Clara Matthews entitled “Planned Parenthood Abortion Methods Page Ignores The Baby” (http://www.lifenews.com/2011/07/08/planned-parenthood-abortion-methods-page-ignores-the-baby/). Matthews noted how the language on the Planned Parenthood website avoids any mention of the baby as it describes an abortion by saying, “Either a hand-held suction device or a suction machine gently empties your uterus” (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/abortion/in-clinic-abortion-procedures-4359.asp). There is a complete avoidance of even mentioning what is being “removed.” If you look further you will find that even for Dialation and Evacuation, you in the same place the Planned Parenthood website says, “In later second-trimester procedures, you may also need a shot through your abdomen to make sure there is fetal demise before the procedure begins.” When there is no way to avoid mentioning the baby, now the act of killing it is described as “fetal demise.”
This observation underscores an incredible fact. Abortion supporters want to talk about everything except what actually happens in abortion. They don’t want the public to hear about what actually happens to the baby in abortion. And the one thing they absolutely don’t want you to see is what remains of the baby after an abortion.
Abortion supporters have used the media to set the parameters of public discourse. They have made sure that any attempt to show pictures of the remains of babies killed in abortion is pejoratively labeled as “sensationalist” and draws condemnation in the public square. They have done this for good reason – because it is the most devastating attack on their position. Nothing forces the human mind to focus on the true nature of what abortion is like the picture of a tiny severed hand or foot. The results of second and third trimester abortions are even more hideous. When we are told that they are “rare” or an exception, remember that they account for ten percent of abortions. With more than a million abortions performed each year, that means that some 100,000 babies are killed in this way every year – nearly twice the number of Americans killed in the entire Vietnam War.
Pictures – images – have played a key role in demonstrating the horrors of the Holocaust. They helped to turn American sentiment against the Vietnam War and for the Civil Rights movement. They are powerful tools in shaping public opinion – especially when they force people to confront the truth. The power of ultrasound images in beginning to turn popular opinion against abortion – or at least to raise serious questions – cannot be doubted. For very good reason, the actual results of abortion remain the one thing that abortion supporters don’t want people to see.
It is valid concern that images must be used in a considerate fashion. My concern is that abortion supporters have used the media to remove them from the public square all together. They have no real role in discourse about such an important topic whereas they have been a major part of public discussion on other issues.
