The New York Times has recently run an article describing the hookup culture on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. It is a sad and empty situation in which, "Women said universally that hookups could not exist without alcohol,
because they were for the most part too uncomfortable to pair off with
men they did not know well without being drunk." Not surprisingly, it is also a culture that generates coercion and sexual assault.
Mona Charen has written a commentary about the New York Times piece in which she observes that the culture is trying to sell the notion that liberated women love casual, meaningless sex. However the "liberation" described in the New York Times article hardly sounds like a great advance for the well being of women.
